Glossary: IEC, ANSI, AG and friends

Plain meanings for the naming systems you see on packs and in manuals.

IEC

International Electrotechnical Commission — the usual datasheet language: LR44, SR44, CR2032, SR626SW.

Letters ≈ type (LR alkaline, SR silver oxide, CR lithium). Numbers ≈ size.

Prefer this code when the device maker prints one.

ANSI

Common on US and Canadian packs: A76, 357, 377, 364.

Often printed beside the IEC code on the same pack — not a different battery by itself.

AG / SG

Shop shorthand — not a formal standard.

AG ≈ alkaline button; SG ≈ silver oxide of a similar size.

AG13 ≈ LR44 size; SG13 ≈ SR44 size. Type differs — do not swap blindly.

JIS

Japanese Industrial Standards.

Japanese manuals usually still show familiar CR / LR codes.

L-numbers and brand prefixes

L1154 encodes size (about 11.6 × 5.4 mm); often the same alkaline family as LR44.

DL2032 (Duracell), ECR2032 (Energizer), V357 (Varta) are brand labels for the same standard cells.

Watch-trade numbers

Bench codes like 377 / 364 used by jewellers.

They map to silver-oxide watch batteries — not to CR2032 lithium coins.
