Kestrel 4500 battery
2 × 1.5V alkaline cell
How to replace it
| How to open | Open battery door; insert two AAA batteries. Before closing, push the plastic shim between batteries and place clear ring over positive battery bump (4500/4600 compass magnetic-signature step). |
|---|---|
| Orientation | As marked in compartment / shim orientation for 4500 & 4600 |
| Seal / O-ring | Re-insert the battery shim with new batteries |
| reset After Replacement | Yes |
| Notes | After battery change on 4500/4600, recalibrate the digital compass. Prefer lithium AAA; if using alkaline, remove for long-term storage (>1 month). |

New battery but still not working?
A fresh 2 × AAA should restore Kestrel 4500 if the battery was the problem. Work through the checks below before replacing the device.
- Check orientation
Confirm the cell is seated correctly: As marked in compartment / shim orientation for 4500 & 4600
- Check the battery type
This device needs 2 × AAA (alkaline). Rechargeable cells are only suitable when the manufacturer accepts that chemistry — set battery type in device settings if available. Same size does not always mean the same battery.
- Check known model-specific issues
Re-insert the battery shim with new batteries Lithium AAA strongly recommended (cold weather / leak risk). Alkaline leak damage not covered under warranty if left installed in storage. Compass recalibration required after opening the battery door (4500/4600).
- Confirm the battery itself
If you have a battery tester or multimeter, check the cell. A low open-circuit voltage often means replace; for rechargeable AA/AAA, a capacity test is more informative than voltage alone.
- Still not responding?
If a correct, fresh battery installed properly does not restore the device, the fault may be elsewhere — the device may need service or replacement.
