Nikon FM2 battery
2 × 1.5V alkaline button cell
The Nikon FM2 takes two LR44 alkaline, two SR44 silver oxide, or one CR13N (CR1/3N) lithium for the meter LEDs. The shutter remains mechanically operable without a battery. Same dual-option cell pattern as the Minolta X-700.

How to replace it
| Compartment | Battery chamber in the camera base |
|---|---|
| How to open | Open the base battery cover. Insert either two LR44/SR44 button cells or one CR13N (CR1/3N) matching polarity marks. |
| Orientation | Follow polarity marks inside the chamber |
| Low battery indicator | Viewfinder LED meter indicators fail or dim when the cell is weak |
| Notes | Mechanical shutter and film advance work without a battery. Meter LEDs need a live cell. |
| Access | Tool-free |
Important
- Takes 2× LR44 (alkaline), 2× SR44 (silver oxide), or 1× CR13N (CR1/3N) lithium — same dual-option pattern as Minolta X-700.
- Meter LEDs need power; the shutter remains mechanically operable without a battery per FM2 documentation.
- Not a 6V 4LR44 / PX28 cell and not a PX625 mercury meter cell.
- Keep button cells away from children.

New battery but still not working?
A fresh 2 × LR44 should restore Nikon FM2 if the battery was the problem. Work through the checks below before replacing the device.
- Check orientation
Confirm the cell is seated correctly: Follow polarity marks inside the chamber
- Check the battery type
This device needs 2 × LR44 (alkaline). Rechargeable cells are not supported for this device. Same size does not always mean the same battery.
- Check known model-specific issues
Takes 2× LR44 (alkaline), 2× SR44 (silver oxide), or 1× CR13N (CR1/3N) lithium — same dual-option pattern as Minolta X-700. Meter LEDs need power; the shutter remains mechanically operable without a battery per FM2 documentation. Not a 6V 4LR44 / PX28 cell and not a PX625 mercury meter cell.
- Confirm the battery itself
For most coin cells, fitting a known-good fresh cell of the correct code is simpler than capacity testing.
- Still not responding?
If a correct, fresh battery installed properly does not restore the device, the fault may be elsewhere — the device may need service or replacement.
