Smart lock batteries
Smart-lock batteries are model- and generation-specific. Many US locks use 4× AA alkaline, but Schlage BE365 is 1× 9V, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock 4th Gen is 2× CR123A, and Nest × Yale forbids rechargeable NiMH. Identify the exact model on the lock or in the app before buying.
Which generation do you have?
| Generation / model | Battery | Replaceable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schlage Encode (BE489) | 4 × AA alkaline | Yes | Allegion KB: high-quality alkaline AA. Lithium and rechargeable AA are not recommended. |
| Schlage Encode Plus / Lever / Connect / Sense | 4 × AA alkaline | Yes | Same Allegion alkaline AA table as Encode for BE499 / FE789 / BE469ZP / BE479. Confirm the exact SKU on the lock. |
| Schlage Keypad Deadbolt (BE365) | 1 × 9V alkaline | Yes | Not the Encode 4× AA answer — Allegion lists one 9V alkaline for BE365. |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 | 4 × AA alkaline | Yes | Yale product specs include 4 AA alkaline batteries with the lock. |
| Nest × Yale Lock | 4 × AA alkaline (no NiMH) | Yes | Google Nest Help: four standard AA alkaline only — do not use rechargeable NiMH. Temporary outdoor 9V power is an OEM emergency procedure, not a substitute pack. |
| Kwikset Halo / Aura | 4 × AA alkaline | Yes | Kwikset: 4× AA; alkaline recommended. Do not use rechargeable or lithium-ion cells for Halo. Aura uses the same 4× AA tray procedure. |
| August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) | 2 × CR123A | Yes | August Support: 2× CR123/CR123A lithium. Not AA. Do not use rechargeable cells. |
| August Smart Lock Pro / 2nd Gen | 4 × AA alkaline | Yes | August Support: Pro / 2nd Gen (and 3rd Gen) use 4× AA — not the 4th Gen Wi-Fi CR123A answer. |

Still not working?
If the lock label or app model does not match a page above, stop and open the manufacturer support article for that exact SKU. Do not copy an Encode AA answer onto a 9V Schlage keypad, and do not invent chemistry allowances. August 4th Gen Wi-Fi is CR123A — not AA.
