Apple TV / Siri remote batteries
Apple remotes changed power design across generations. Identify whether you have a classic AA remote or a sealed rechargeable Siri Remote before shopping for cells.
Which generation do you have?
| Generation / model | Battery | Replaceable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Remote (aluminium, older) | Confirm tray (often 1 × AA) | Yes | Classic Apple Remote designs used a replaceable AA. Confirm the tray marking on your unit — Apple support lists generation-specific steps. |
| Siri Remote / Apple TV Remote (Lightning / USB-C) | Built-in rechargeable | No | Sealed lithium pack charged via Lightning or USB-C. Not a user-replaceable AA/AAA design — charge the remote instead of buying cells. Zinc-air / disposable packs are never substitutes. |
| Unsure which remote you have | Identify first — no cell yet | No | A charge port on the bottom means sealed rechargeable. A sliding battery door usually means replaceable cells — read the tray print before buying anything. |
Still not working?
Charge a sealed Siri Remote, or fit the tray-labelled cell on a classic remote. Only then consider Apple’s current remote as a hardware replacement.
