Mini Maglite AA LED battery
2 × 1.5V alkaline cell
Short answer: two AA alkaline cells. Unscrew the tail cap, replace both cells together (positive toward the lamp), and tighten. Maglite publishes runtime on alkaline; NiMH may reduce output. Do not buy AAA Mini Maglite cells for this barrel.
How to replace it
| Compartment | Tail cap |
|---|---|
| How to open | Unscrew the tail cap counterclockwise; remove both AA cells; install two fresh AA alkaline cells; reinstall and tighten. |
| Orientation | Positive (+) end toward the lamp/head |
| Access | Tool-free |
| Notes | Spare lamp may be stored in some older Mini Maglite tail caps — LED models differ; verify your SKU. |
Important
- Not the Mini Maglite AAA (2× AAA) — wrong diameter/length family.
- Not classic Maglite C/D barrel lights.

New battery but still not working?
A fresh 2 × AA should restore Mag Instrument (Maglite) Mini Maglite AA LED if the battery was the problem. Work through the checks below before replacing the device.
- Check orientation
Confirm the cell is seated correctly: Positive (+) end toward the lamp/head
- Check the battery type
This device needs 2 × AA (alkaline). Same size does not always mean the same battery.

- Check known model-specific issues
Not the Mini Maglite AAA (2× AAA) — wrong diameter/length family. Not classic Maglite C/D barrel lights. Maglite FAQs: NiMH allowed but may reduce output/runtime vs alkaline test data.
- Confirm the battery itself
If you have a battery tester or multimeter, check the cell. A low open-circuit voltage often means replace; for rechargeable AA/AAA, a capacity test is more informative than voltage alone.
- Still not responding?
If a correct, fresh battery installed properly does not restore the device, the fault may be elsewhere — the device may need service or replacement.
